How to Buy a Bike Rack

Questions to Answer Before Buying
Before even going to buy a bike rack, you need to ask yourself some questions. The answers will guide the decision and make the experience easier. The main questions are:
- What type of bike will you be carrying?
- How many bikes will you be carrying?
- What kind of vehicle do you drive?
Types of Bike Racks
When looking for bike racks, you might be overwhelmed by the number of choices. Knowing which will work best with your vehicle and for the number of bikes being transported is important. The main types are:
- Tow-bar mounted: These are generally more expensive, but usually offer better quality than other types. These are attached to a tow bar, with a locking device for security purposes. Some models are designed so that you can access the trunk of the vehicle while the bike is still attached.
- Strap mounted: As the least expensive option, these tend to be quite popular. Bikes are secured using straps with hooks. These do not normally have any security features so it is easier for the bikes to get stolen. These are best for trips where you will not have to leave the bikes for extended periods.
- Roof mounted: These racks are ideal for more than one bike. Most can carry up to four bikes at a time. They are highly convenient as they keep the bikes out of the way so that doors and trucks can be opened. The fact that they are on the roof also reduces the chance of theft.
A major consideration is security. Not all bike racks come with locks, but having a lock will help to prevent theft. These will be a little more expensive but that is a small price to pay to keep your bike safe. Not only should it be possible to secure the bike to the rack, you should also be able to secure the bike rack itself to your vehicle.
If money is no problem, it is better to choose the types that offer the most security for your bike. The automotive industry is aware that many people like to take their bikes with them. As such, many manufacturers are putting out cars and SUVs with convenient features on which to attach bike racks.
