Knowing When Your Kitchen Needs Work

Signs to Guide the Decision to Get a New Kitchen
There are many signs that a homeowner can use to help them decide whether it is better to build a brand new kitchen or just renovate what already exists. Some of these include:
- A kitchen where the plumbing is constantly in need of repair. In a case such as this, the entire plumbing system may need replacing, which may mean removing drywalls and fixtures.
- If your kitchen cabinets are no longer closing properly or they are warping, then they need to be replaced. This would be a good time to redesign the look of the cabinets and even put in additional storage.
- Damaged flooring and drywalls are also good signs that it is time for a new kitchen. Major signs of moisture that is causing mould growth and damage to flooring or walls is another good reason to get rid of the old kitchen if you have the money.
- The condition of your countertops is another indication that it is time to upgrade. They may start looking dull, as well as show signs of use and age such as gashes and chips.
- An outdated kitchen is one that you no longer enjoy cooking in, plus the appliances may be energy hogs. Updating your boring kitchen is the perfect time to also get new energy efficient appliances.
When rebuilding or renovating your kitchen, you need to have a plan before you even talk to a contractor. In fact, you should ask and answer some questions before you begin any work, whether it is renovation or rebuilding. These questions include:
- How many people are normally in the kitchen at any one time?
- How often and what do you normally cook?
- Do you entertain and if yes, how often?
If small changes such as replacing light fixtures and a fresh coat of paint will make your kitchen look better, then maybe renovation is all that is needed. This is a less expensive and time consuming project. You do not need to wait until your kitchen is literally falling apart around you to give it a well-needed facelift.
